Vijaya Ekadasi

Literal meaning of Ekadshi is, the 11th day of lunar month as per Hindu calendar. There are two Ekadasis celebrated in every lunar month. So, there are overall 24 Ekadashi in a year. The year of Adhimasa have 26 Ekadashis. Moon month have two parts (Paksha). The 11th date of both the Paksha is called Ekadashi. It is believed that result of observing Ekadasi Fast is even more than the fruits earned by donating gold, land, cereals and cow. Lord Vishnu is worshipped on the day of Ekadshi

Vijaya Ekadashi occurs during the waning phase of moon (Krishna Paksha) in February – March. In 2012, the date of Vijaya Ekadashi is February 17. The greatness of this Ekadasi is mentioned in the Skanda Purana. Observing of Vijaya Ekadasi helps in removing all the guilt associated with sins committed and also helps in attaining victory. It is believed that Lord Ram observed Vijaya Ekadashi to cross the ocean to reach Lanka to defeat Ravana.

Ekadasi is a Sanskrit word, which means 'the eleventh'. It refers to the eleventh day of a fortnight belonging to a lunar month. There are two fortnights in a lunar month—the bright and the dark. So, Ekadasi occurs twice in a month, in the bright fortnight and the dark fortnight.

Bhisma Ekadashi, or Bheesma Ekadasi, is observed in the Magha Month (January – February). In 2012, the date of Bhishma Ekadasi is February 3. It is believed that the Vishnu Sahasranama Stothram was revealed to the Pandavas on this day by Bhisma, who was lying in a bed of arrows after the Great War in Mahabharat. It is believed that Bhishma chose this period to leave his body and merge with the Supreme Soul (Brahman). It is also known as Jaya Ekadashi. Observing Jaya Ekadashi Vrata gives the devotees the opportunity to get rid of the sins and to get salvation.

Vasant Panchami is the Hindu festival that highlights the coming of spring. This festival is usually celebrated on fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Magh Mass, which is between the months of January and February in Gregorian calendar. On this day Lord Vishnu, God Krishna-Radha and Goddess of education Mata Saraswati is worshiped with yellow flowers, Gulal, water offerings, incense, lamp etc. In the Puja, as per the tradition, yellow and sweet rice and yellow colored Halwa is offered to God and then eaten as Prasadam. In the year 2012, the festival will be celebrated on 28th January.

Panchami is also celebrated as the birthday of Goddess Saraswati. Dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of learning and Brahma's wife. Goddess Saraswati is the mother of wisdom and music.This festival is specially significant for lovers of art and education. The goddess Sarasvati, sitting on a lotus, symbolizes her wisdom. She is also well-versed in the experience of truth. When the goddess is seen sitting on a peacock, it is a reminder that a strong ego can be held back by wisdom.

The day of Vasant Panchami is considered as the beginning of life, arrival of happiness, the season of rebirth and renewal. Vasant Panchami is included in the Abujh muhurat. Vasant Panchami is a favorable day for auspicious works like marriage, construction of house, beginning of a factory etc. and considered as of a favorable Muhurat for inauguration of an educational institute.

'Kumbh Fair' takes place when the planet Jupiter enters Aquarius and the Sun enters Aries. The Ardh (half) Kumbh Mela is held every 6th years at Haridwar and Prayag (Allahabad), the Purna (complete) Kumbh Mela is celebrated every twelve years at four places Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik.

-Prayag (near the city of Allahabad, in the state of Uttar Pradesh) at the confluence of three rivers Ganga (Ganges), Yamuna and mythical Saraswati.

-Haridwar (in the state of Uttaranchal Pradesh) where the river Ganga enters the plains from Himalayas.

-Ujjain (in Madhya Pradesh), on the banks of Ksipra river.

-Nasik (in Maharashtra) on the banks of Godavari river.

The Maha (great) Kumbh Mela which comes after 12 'Purna Kumbh Melas', or 144 years, is held at Prayag.

Kumbh Mela is celebrated at different locations depending on the position of the planet of Jupiter and the sun. When Jupiter and the sun are in the zodiac sign Leo during the Hindu month of Bhadraprada (August-September) it is held in Trimbakeshwar (Nashik); when the sun is in Aries and Jupiter is in Aquarius during the Hindu month of Chaitra (March-April) it is celebrated at Haridwar; when Jupiter is in Aries or Taurus and the sun and Moon are in Capricorn during the Hindu month of Magha (January-February) Kumbha Mela is celebrated at Prayag (Allahabad); and Jupiter and the sun are in Scorpio the Mela is celebrated at Ujjain. In 2013 the Purna Kumbh Mela will be held on Allahabad which occurs after every 12th years.

Legend

Kumbh means pot or pitcher. Mela means festival or fair. Hence, the Kumbh Mela means festival of the pot. It specifically relates to the pot of nectar in Hindu mythology. Legend has it that the gods once lost their strength. In order to regain it, they agreed with the demons to churn the primordial ocean of milk for amrit (the nectar of immortality). The Mandara Mountain acted as the churning rod and Vasuki (king of serpents) was used as a rope for churning. Kumbh was the pot which consist the nectar of immortality and was recovered from Samudramanthan. This was to be shared equally between them. They churned the ocean for 1000 years, where demons were holding Vasuki’s head and Gods were holding its tail. Finally after this entire churning process, Dhanwantari appeared with Kumbh in his palms. To prevent the amrita (elixir of immortality) from demons, its safety was entrusted to Gods Brahaspati, Surya, Shani and Chandra. After learning the conspiracy of the Devtas, demons turned vicious and attacked them. However, a fight broke out, which went on for 12 human years. During the battle, the celestial bird, Garuda, flew away with the Kumbh that held the nectar. Drops of nectar are believed to have fallen in the places that the Kumbh Mela is now held -- Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain.

It is believed that these drops gave mystical powers to these places. It is to make oneself gain on those powers that Kumbh Mela has been celebrated in each of the four places. Pilgrims who attend the Kumbh Mela come to see and listen to these men, in order to gain spiritual enlightenment. The main ritual performed at that Kumbh Mela is the ritual bath. Hindus believe that submerging themselves in the sacred waters on the most auspicious day of the new moon will absolve them and their ancestors of sin, thus ending the cycle of rebirth.

बडी़ दिवाली से एक दिन पहले छोटी दिवाली का त्यौहार मनाया जाता है. इस दिन को नरक चतुर्दशी अथवा नरका चौदस भी कहते हैं. इस दिन संध्या समय में पूजा की जाती है और अपनी - अपनी परंपरा के अनुसार दीये जलाए जाते हैं.

दिवाली से अगले दिन अन्नकूट का पर्व मनाया जाता है. इस दिन मंदिरों में सभी सब्जियों को मिलाकर एक सब्जी बनाते हैं, जिसे अन्नकूट कहा जाता है अन्नकूट के साथ पूरी बनाई जाती है. कहीं-कहीं साथ में कढी़-चावल भी बनाए जाते हैं. रात्रि समय में गोवर्धन पूजा भी की जाती है.

Karva Chauth is an annual one-day festival celebrated by all married Hindu women. They observe a fast for the long life of her husband. The movement of the earth from one zodiac sign into another is called Sankranti and as the Sun moves into the Capricorn zodiac known as Makar in Hindi, this occasion is named as Makar Sankranti in the Indian context. It is one of the few Hindu Indian festivals which are celebrated on 14 January every year. According to the Hindu scriptures the movement of Sun is two fold, Uttarayan and Dakshinaya. The word ‘Ayan’ means movement. On Makar Sankranti, Sun travels from Southernmost point (Dakshinayan) to the northernmost point (uttarayan). Uttarayan (उत्तरायण), is the six-month period between Makar Sankranti (January 14) and Karka Sankranti (July 14), when the sun travels towards the north on the celestial sphere. The period from 14th July to 14th January is known as Dakshinayan (दक्षिणायण). The starting of Uttarayan is celebrated as Makara Sankranti throughout India.

Sankranti is the Sanskrit word in Indian Astrology which refers to the transmigration of the Sun from one Rashi (sign of the zodiac) to another. Hence there are twelve such sankrantis in one year. However, the Sankranti festival usually refers to Makara Sankaranti, the transition of the Sun from Sagittarius to Capricorn. Uttarayan, literally meaning northward journey of Sun.

Considering the Winter Solstice marks the beginning of the gradual increase of the duration of the day. Scientifically, the shortest day of the year is around December 21–22 after which the days begin to get longer, hence actual Winter Solstice begins on December 21 or December 22 when the tropical sun enters Makara rashi. Hence actual Uttarayana is December 21. Sankranti as per current scientific evidence should fall on 21st of December. While the traditional Indian Calendar is based on lunar positions, Sankranti is a solar event. So while dates of all Hindu festivals keep changing as per the Gregorian calendar, the date of Makar Sankranti remains constant over a long term, 14 January. Makar Sankranti is celebrated in the Hindu Calendar month of Magha.

Makar Sankranti is regarded as the beginning of an auspicious phase in Indian culture. It is said as the 'holy phase of transition'. It marks the end of an inauspicious phase which according to the Hindu calendar begins around mid-December. It is believed that any auspicious and sacred ritual can be sanctified in any Hindu family, this day onwards. Scientifically, this day marks the beginning of warmer and longer days compared to the nights. In other words, Sankranti marks the termination of winter season and beginning of a new harvest or spring season.

Makara Sankranti identifies a period of enlightenment, peace, prosperity and happiness followed by a period of darkness, ignorance and viciousness with immense sorrow. Entry of sun in Capricorn sign is the beginning of a new life. The six months of northern movement of the sun is followed by six months of southern movement. The Sun moves from South to North during Uttarayan. According to astrology the six months period of the movement of Sun from Capricorn to Gemini zodiac, is called Uttarayan. According to Hindu Panchang the period of ‘Magh’ to ‘Aasad’ month is known as Uttarayan. Out of six seasons, the winter, spring and summer falls during Uttarayan. The duration of days starts increasing and that of night starts shortening during uttarayan. The Vedic scriptures regard the period of utterayan as the period of deities. Bhisham pitamah waited for Uttarayan to proceed for his heavenly abode. The Holy River Ganga also touched the earth on this divine day. This day, Gods wake up after sleeping for 6 months.

According to the astrology, people who are not getting the favorable results of sun and Saturn should observe the fast of Makar Sankranthi. They should give donations of sun and Saturn products. Also, people who don’t have good relationship with father or son should observe this fast and give donations. No life can be imagined on earth without sun. Doing Surya Namaskar and offering water to sun everyday, increases fortune and paternal happiness. This day is also called the Surya Upasana Day. Motive behind using and donating Til and Ladoos made of jaggery, on the day of Makar Sankranthi is the same as above. According to astrology, Til is the food of Saturn and jaggery is the food of sun. Til is the producer of oil, that’s why people on this day have food items made of Til and jaggery to please Saturn and sun. Nag Panchami is celebrated on 5th day of Shukla Paksha in Sharavan Maas. This year, the festival will be celebrated on 4th August, Saturday in Hast nakshatra. On the day of Naag Panchami, fast is kept in order to make God Snake happy. Nine serpent deities are worshiped on the auspicious Nag Panchami day. Elaborate rituals in the form of 'puja' are held in temples and temporary altars in the honor of snake gods - Ananta, Vasuki, Padmanabha, Sesha, Kambala, Shankhapala, Dhruthrashtra, Takshaka and Kaliya - the nine prominent snake gods. In Eastern India Nag Panchami is dedicated to the serpent goddess, Manasa. According to one myth, Lord Krishna conquered evil King Naga Kalia and put an end to the evil deeds of an evil snake on Nag Panchami.

Ekadasi is the 11th day of every lunar fortnight in traditional Hindu calendar, an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Fasting on Ekadashi is considered highly auspicious and is believed to help in redemption of sins and in attaining Moksha.

Kamika Ekadasi is observed during the waning phase of moon in the month July or early August. It is believed that observing this Ekadashi is equal to bathing in sacred rivers on auspicious days and also equal to reading all the scriptures dedicated to Lord Vishnu. In 2011, Kamika Ekadasi date is July 26.

Offering Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu on this day is considered highly auspicious. Another important offering made is lighting ghee or sesame oil filled lamps at Sri Krishna Temples.

Shoonya Tithi

Shoonya means null or zero. Each tithi makes shoonya effect on two rashis eccept chaturdashi, amawas, purnima. Chaturdashi make shoonya four rashis while amawas and purnima affects none. Tithi is the date according to the Hindu lunar calendar. The Hindu lunar calendar consists of a dark and a bright fortnight also called Krishna paksha and Shukla Paksha. Tithi is said to be complete when moon has 12 degree from the sun. when moon complete 12 degree each time one tithi is comptete. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month. It is important to note that starting or ending of a Tithi depends upon the degree of Moon from that of Sun therefore a Tithi ends or starts at any time in a day not like the Modern Time when a date changes at midnight.There are 30 tithis in a lunar month. In Indian Astrology, the calculation of the Tithis starts from Pratipada (The first day in each half of the lunar month) of the Shukla-Paksha. Tithis are as follows : Pratipada, Dwitiya, Tritiya, Chaturthee, Panchami, Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navmi, Dashmi, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Trayodashi, Chaturdashi, and Purnima. Lords of the Shoonya tithi rashis and the planets posited therein not able to produce favourable results in most of the cases but exeptions are there.

Ekadasi Fasting is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and falls on the 11th day of a lunar fortnight in traditional Hindu Calendar. Devsayani Ekadasi is observed on Shukla paksha Ekadashi in Ashada month. In the year 2011 Devshayani Ekadasi date is July 11, Monday. Chaturmas Pooja or Chaturmas Vrata of four holy months begins with the Devshayani Ekadasi. These four auspicious months in the Hindu calendar are Shravan, Bhadarpada, Ashvin and Kartik. In these four months the atmosphere is heavy with moisture and is a time for the downpour of cool rain.

Devashayani Ekadashi also known as Harivasara Ekadasi or Vishnu Sayana Ekadasi during when Lord Vishnu goes on to cosmic sleep. According to the Puranas, Lord Vishnu is said to take rest in Ksheer Saagar on this day. After 4 months He comes out from Ksheer Saagar. This day is known as Probodhina Ekadashi day. A fast is observed on Devshayani Ekadashi to please Lord Vishnu. The fast demands abstainance from all grains, beans, cereals, certain vegetables like onions and certain spices and all kinds of meat and eggs.

देवशयनी एकादशी

आषाढ़ मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी को देवशयनी एकादशी कहा जाता है। यह तिथि पद्मनाभा भी कहलाती है । प्रत्येक वर्ष में चौबीस एकादशियाँ होती हैं। जब अधिकमास आता है तब इनकी संख्या बढ़कर २६ हो जाती है। सूर्य के मिथुन राशि में आने पर ये एकादशी आती है। इस दिन भगवान श्री हरि विष्णु क्षीरसागर में शयन करते हैं और फिर लगभग चार माह बाद तुला राशि में सूर्य के जाने पर उन्हें उठाया जाता है। उस दिन को देवोत्थानी एकादशी कहा जाता है। इस बीच के अंतराल को ही चातुर्मास कहा गया है। इस तरह आषाढ़ शुक्ल एकादशी से कार्तिक शुक्ल एकादशी तक का समय चातुर्मास काल कहलाता है। 11 जुलाई 2011 के दिन देवशयनी एकद्शी रहेगी.

हिंदू धर्म में एकादशी का व्रत महत्वपूर्ण स्थान रखता है। ब्रह्म वैवर्त पुराण में देवशयनी एकादशी के विशेष माहात्म्य का वर्णन किया गया है। इस व्रत से प्राणी की समस्त मनोकामनाएँ पूर्ण हो जाती हैं। व्रती के सारे पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। यदि व्रती चातुर्मास का पालन विधिपूर्वक करे तो महाफल प्राप्त होता है। इस काल में यज्ञोपवीत संस्कार, विवाह,दीक्षाग्रहण, यज्ञ, ग्रहप्रवेश, गोदान, प्रतिष्ठा एवं जितने भी शुभ कर्म है, वे सभी त्याज्य होते हैं। पुराणों का ऐसा भी मत है कि भगवान विष्णु इस दिन से चार मासपर्यंत (चातुर्मास) पाताल में राजा बलि के द्वार पर निवास करके कार्तिक शुक्ल एकादशी को लौटते हैं।

चातुर्मास की यह विशेषता है कि सभी धर्म के सभी मत इसे साधनाकाल मानते हैं। साधनाकाल होने से ब्रह्मïचर्य व्रत का पालन व पलंग पर शयन निषेध कहा गया है। स्वास्थ्य के लिए यह सावधानी आवश्यक है। चातुर्मास के चार माह - श्रावण, भाद्रपद, आश्विन तथा कार्तिक में क्रमश: शाक, दूध और दही का सेवन निषेध होता है । आयुर्वेद के अनुसार चातुर्मास में पत्तेदार शाक-सब्जियों का भी उपयोग स्वास्थ्य को हानि पहुंचाता है । देवशयनी एकाद्शी व्रत को करने से भगवान श्री विष्णु प्रसन्न होते है. अत: मोक्ष की इच्छा करने वाले व्यक्तियों को इस एकादशी का व्रत अवश्य करना चाहिए.

The eclipse is taking place in Taurus Sign of Zodiac and to be more precise in Rohini Nakshatra (Eclipse start in Rohini Nakshatra 4th quarter in Taurus Sign). This eclipse is the third of four partial solar eclipses in 2011, occurs at the Moons descending node in western Gemini. The eclipse begins in the extreme southern Antarctic Ocean and ends in the deep southern Antarctic Ocean.A solar eclipse signifies a fresh start which can also bring about radical change, like a new chapter beginning in your life. New Moon's are times of new beginnings, planting seeds and setting intentions.

A solar eclipse occurs at the time of the new moon when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. The full Lunar eclipse on 15th June 2011 will be visible completely over Africa, and Central Asia, visible rising over South America, western Africa, and Europe, and setting over eastern Asia. In western Asia, Australia and the Philippines, the lunar eclipse will be visible just before sunrise.

Eclipse will start when Moon will be in its debilitated sign Scorpio and in the nakshatra of Jayestha 4th pada and will remain till Moon will be in Sagittarius in the nakshatra Mool 1st pada.
